What is Doctor's Best Lutein with FloraGLO? Doctor's Best Lutein with FloraGLO with Zeaxanthin supports healthy vision and supports macular pigment density. FloraGLO lutein supports skin health and helps prevent skin aging. It provides high-quality FloraGLO lutein, a highly bioavailable, natural source of lutein. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the two main types of carotenoids found in humans, and are highly concentrated in the retina of the human eye. Lutein and zeaxanthin are also powerful free radical scavengers that likely contribute to the body's antioxidant defense spectrum. How does it work? Most of the beneficial effects of xanthophylls, which are photochemical transformation products of lutein, are attributed to their ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species and other free radical species that either enter from the environment or are generated internally during natural metabolic processes. In vitro evidence for lutein’s free radical scavenging activity is found in studies of its effects on human lens epithelial cells. In one such study, cell cultures were exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light after treatment with either lutein or alpha-tocopherol. Both nutrients were found to reduce UV-induced damage to lens epithelial cells. However, lutein was shown to have significantly greater photoprotective activity than alpha-tocopherol, demonstrating its potential as a powerful antioxidant. Lutein has also been shown to be an effective “blue light” filter, another daily source of oxidative stress to the polyunsaturated fatty acid-rich photoreceptors in our eyes. Why should I take Doctor’s Best Lutein with FloraGLO? Lutein and zeaxanthin are yellow pigments that belong to a class of carotenoids called xanthophylls. Since the human body does not synthesize them, we rely on dietary sources for these carotenoids. The average American consumes only 2 mg of lutein and zeaxanthin per day. The best sources of these important nutrients are dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, collard greens and kale, as well as certain yellow-orange fruits and vegetables. Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are called “macular pigments” because they are the only carotenoids found in the lens and macular region of the human eye. More than 20 human studies using FloraGLO Lutein have produced a body of literature, published in peer-reviewed journals or presented as abstracts at scientific conferences, that supports the efficacy and safety of this specific ingredient.
