Each Natrol Pycnogenol capsule contains 50 mg of pine bark extract, providing 85% water-soluble proanthocyanidins. Pycnogenol is a natural plant extract derived from the bark of Pinus Maritima, and contains compounds that act as antioxidants that scavenge free radicals. Fruits, vegetables, and herbs contain large amounts of powerful and protective antioxidant nutrients. The largest group of these nutrients is known to scientists as polyphenolic flavonoids - the same antioxidants found in Pycnogenol. Pycnogenol contains a rich and unique complex of over 40 water-soluble antioxidants, including various procyanidin compounds and organic acids. Aqueous solubility increases the bioavailability of Pycnogenol, which is primarily composed of proanthocyanidins, a very powerful subclass of antioxidant flavonoids. Pycnogenol also contains many other related organic acids, as well as other polyphenols, including the biologically active hydroxycinnamic acids, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, epicatechins and taxifolin - yet other types of flavonoids - that make up the rest of Pycnogenol.
