Read more about this product. What is Doctor's Best Stabilized R-Lipoic Acid? Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing fatty acid that performs vitamin-like functions in the body, but because the body produces lipoic acid itself, it is not classified as a true vitamin. It functions as a coenzyme in carbohydrate metabolism and is essential for the synthesis of acetyl CoA, a key metabolite in the cellular process that converts glucose (blood sugar) into energy. Stabilized R-Lipoic Acid contains Na-RLA, the sodium salt of R-Lipoic acid. Pure R-Lipoic acid is a very unstable molecule that tends to polymerize when exposed to heat, light, and moisture. Na-RLA is a stabilized form of R-Lipoic acid that does not break down at high temperatures. How does it work? Lipoic acid is a key factor in the cellular process that metabolizes glucose for energy. Aging is accompanied by a decreased ability of the liver to recycle ascorbic acid following oxidative stress. R-Lipoic acid, after two weeks of supplementation in aged rats, has been shown to reverse age-related impairments in the recycling and concentration of ascorbic acid in liver cells. Aging is also associated with oxidative stress in the brain. The brain’s high metabolic rate and long-lived neurons make it particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress. Because lipoic acid interrupts cellular oxidative processes in both its oxidized and reduced forms, it plays a modulatory role in the brain and nervous system. Why should I take Doctor’s Best Stabilized R-Lipoic Acid? An ideal antioxidant should have the ability to scavenge a variety of free radicals, support the function of other antioxidants, bind or “chelate” metal ions that can generate free radicals, function in aqueous and fatty environments, and be present in various tissues, cells, and extracellular spaces. Lipoic acid meets all of these criteria and is often called the “universal antioxidant.” As we age, our ability to synthesize alpha-lipoic acid declines. Age also brings a buildup of oxidized proteins that interfere with mitochondrial efficiency, and alpha-lipoic acid addresses this situation. Alpha-lipoic acid exists in two forms, designated “R-lipoic acid” and “S-lipoic acid.” R- and S-lipoic acid are enantiomeric isomers—molecules that appear as mirror images of each other. R-lipoic acid is synthesized naturally in humans, animals, and plants.
